Stop the increase in property tax in Waterloo for 2026

The Issue

I am a homeowner living in the beautiful city of Waterloo. Year after year, I have seen our property taxes rise without any significant improvement in our local infrastructure. Among the neighboring cities in Ontario, Waterloo homeowners are burdened with some of the highest property taxes, yet the benefits we reap appear increasingly insignificant or irrelevant.

The city's decision to further increase property tax for the year 2026 has raised serious concerns, especially given the current economic climate in Canada. These tax increases are not only a heavy burden on homeowners but are also introduced with very little transparency. As residents, it is essential that we are given a clear understanding of the need for such increments, and how they directly translate into improvements in our community.

Currently, the Canadian economy is struggling with inflation and a cost of living that's rising faster than salaries. Homeowners are already straining under these circumstances, and further increases in property taxes can have devastating consequences on personal finances, possibly forcing residents to reconsider living in this vibrant community.

To our city officials: instead of automatically resorting to tax hikes, let's explore alternative avenues to manage budgetary needs. Educating the community on the exact reasons and necessity for any increase, along with redirecting funds or resources more efficiently without immediately impacting taxpayers, are realistic and actionable steps that can be taken without penalizing homeowners.

We need a comprehensive review and a clearly communicated plan that assures all residents of Waterloo that their contributions are being utilized effectively and fairly. We strongly urge our city leaders to reconsider the proposed property tax increase for 2026.

Sign this petition and join me in sending a clear message to the Waterloo City Council that we deserve transparency, equity, and a say in decisions that impact our everyday lives. Together, let's protect our homes and our community from unnecessary financial strain.
