Stop the Implementation of the Third Term Business Improvement District in Sandwell

Stop the Implementation of the Third Term Business Improvement District in Sandwell
The Issue
As small retail business owners in West Bromwich, we have been grappling with the economic impact of COVID-19, inflation and a weak economy. Our businesses have been quiet, and many shops are now closed. We are struggling to keep our doors open and serve our community amidst these challenging times.
In addition to this, we are forced into Business Improvement Districts (BID) schemes that require us to pay extra rates known as BID Levy. These levies pose an additional financial burden on us at a time when every penny counts. We are not seeing any real return on our payments to the BID.
The third term of BID is set to start from June 2025 and continue until 2030. We cannot afford this additional expense and refuse to pay for it. It's important for policymakers to understand that while these schemes may be designed with good intentions, they often overlook the reality on the ground - small businesses already battling economic hardships. Internet retailers do not pay these extra taxes but we do!
Business Rates are paid every month and this money is used to help pay for the services provided by the council. Therfore why should we pay BID to do the work when it is the responsibility of, Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, (SMBC). eg: Cleaning. Similarly, the BID are operating a sort of policing service which, again, we are already paying for via the police precept.
We urge West Bromwich traders to vote againt the implemention of another term of BID from 2025-2030. We also ask SMBC to focus their efforts on supporting local businesses through recovery plans that do not involve further taxation or levies.
Let's stand together as a community and protect our local economy from unnecessary burdens during these trying times. Please sign this petition if you believe in supporting small businesses in West Bromwich by stopping the implementation of another term of Business Improvement Districts.
