Stop the Illegal Trade of Slow Lorises as Pets

Stop the Illegal Trade of Slow Lorises as Pets
The Issue
I am a passionate advocate for animals and the injustice that is happening with the slow loris pet trade deeply concerns me. These innocent creatures are being taken away from their mothers and their natural habitats simply because they seem cute to keep as pets. This practice is not only unjust, it is also despicably inhumane.
Slow lorises are nocturnal, arboreal animals endemic to South-East Asia, and are heavily threatened by the illegal wildlife trade. It's estimated that tens of thousands of slow lorises are sold each year as exotic pets. The demand is so high, their population is dwindling at an alarming rate (Shepherd et al., 2004. Oryx).
Their capture and subsequent trade aren't only damaging to slow lorises' population and their ecosystems, but also cause considerable suffering to the individual animals. They are often cruelly de-toothed to make them defenseless, which often leads to infection and a high rate of mortality (Nekaris, K.A.I. et al., 2013. PLoS ONE).
We must ensure the survival of these amazing creatures and protect them from such vile treatments. We need to call upon our local, state, and national officials to strictly enforce wildlife trafficking laws and stop the slow loris pet trade. Our voices can make a difference, they must make a difference. Sign this petition today to contribute to the fight against the illegal slow loris pet trade.
