Stop the Illegal Mining and Pollution of the Osun Osogbo River

The Issue

The Osun Osogbo river stands as a beacon of both spiritual connection and sustenance for me, my lineage, and my community. It represents a sustainable livelihood and a connected ecosystem. However, its sanctity is being undermined by unchecked pollution and illegal mining activities. Consequently, the life it sustains, and its deep spiritual significance, is gravely threatened.

The destruction of the environment by illegal mining activities is not just an affront to the sacred connection we have to this river, but it also threatens the lives and livelihood of the community. As per the 2017 World Health Organization report, over 75% of diseases caused in developing countries are linked to environmental factors, including water pollution. The illegal mining activities not only pollute our sacred river, but significantly contribute to the degradation of local health.

Furthermore, the socio-economic impact of this ongoing destruction is immense. Our local fisheries are shrinking, freshwater is becoming scarcer, and biodiversity is suffering. Every day, our lives, our community, and our connection to our ancestors are being dismantled bit by bit.

Today, we call on our government and local authorities to put an end to the illegal mining and pollution of the Osun Osogbo river. To restore our part of the world and to preserve it for future generations, we need stringent regulation and action against these harmful activities. Stand with us, demand justice for our river, our group, and our future. Please sign this petition.
