Stop the ICE Detention Center From Opening in Hudson, Colorado
The Issue
The town of Hudson, Colorado wants to reopen a prison that has sat empty for over a decade — this time as a 1,200-bed immigration detention center. The GEO Group, a private prison company, has signed a five-year contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to make it happen. But Hudson's own water plan shows the facility could nearly double the town's yearly water use, and residents are worried about what else the town hasn't planned for.
Wendy Homstad, Caden Grosshans and Emily Shanks live in Hudson. They've watched neighbors show up to meeting after meeting, asking the town to slow down and follow its own rules before letting a detention center this size move in. Instead, they say, officials have stayed silent and let the project move forward anyway.
"I'm not asking Hudson to take a side in a national debate. I'm asking Hudson to follow its own rules, the same rules it would make anybody else follow," said Shanks.
Residents are also worried about what similar detention centers have brought to other small towns: rising 911 calls, strained emergency services, and health risks like the tuberculosis case discovered at GEO's Aurora facility. Hudson has the power to stop this before it starts — but only if enough people demand it.
Sign this petition to tell Hudson's town council to block the ICE detention center and protect the community's water, health, and safety.
