Stop the growth and expansion of factory farms and slaughterhouses in California.

The Issue

We residents of the city of San Diego do hereby ask that the San Diego City Council pass a resolution calling for a moratorium on factory farms and slaughter houses in the state of California similar to the resolution that the San Francisco Board Of Supervisors passed unanimously last November.

Animal agriculture is completely and totally unnecessary for human existence and in fact contributes greatly to the existential threats of climate change and drought along with air pollution and unjust land and water use/pollution. Animal agriculture increases the risk of future pandemics and diseases, dramatically contributes to biodiversity loss, is a leading cause of antibiotic resistance, exacerbates food injustice, tolerates awful farm worker abuse for its work force made up of predominantly poor people of color.

Unnecessarily bred livestock animals use a huge and completely unsustainable amount of our precious and now dwindling resources all while 800 million of our fellow human beings starve at any given time on this planet. And last, but certainly not least is the totally needless, unimaginably cruel animal genocide that goes on unabated day after day after day, year after year after year.
