The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the proposed Great Nicobar Project, a monumental ₹81,000 crore mega-development that threatens one of the world's most pristine and ecologically rich rainforests. Located in the heart of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, this project would endanger the delicate balance of the island’s unique biodiversity and jeopardize the nesting grounds of the critically endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle.

The Great Nicobar Island is not just a treasure of biodiversity; it is home to the Shompen and Nicobarese tribes, whose cultures have thrived in harmony with nature for centuries. This project, if it proceeds, risks eradicating their way of life, paving over their cultural heritage, and displacing their communities. The rich ecosystems that they rely upon are at risk of being decimated, and their voices must be heard before it's too late.

According to a detailed analysis by conservationists, the extensive deforestation anticipated from the construction could result in a loss of habitat for countless species, some of which are found nowhere else on earth. It’s not just about saving the Leatherback Sea Turtle, though that alone is critical—it's about preserving an entire ecological haven that supports life forms crucial to the planet’s health.

Moreover, international environmental agreements call for the protection of such critical habitats, emphasizing the broader global commitment to stopping biodiversity loss. The short-term economic gains promised by the project dwindle in comparison to the long-lasting environmental and cultural damage it could inflict.

I urge policymakers, environmental regulators, and concerned citizens to recognize the gravity of this situation and to take decisive action. By halting the Great Nicobar Project, we can protect these invaluable forests and the creatures—and people—who depend on them. This is not just a local issue but part of a global struggle to preserve the natural world for future generations.
