The Issue

As an Indian citizen and a global citizen, my heart resonates with the pristine beauty of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, particularly the Great Nicobar Island. It’s a paradise on Earth, with its unique biodiversity and unparalleled natural beauty. However, the looming threat of the Great Nicobar Project threatens to irreversibly change this haven. I feel a responsibility to protect it for future generations and to ensure that this natural treasure does not become just a memory.

The Great Nicobar Project, despite its promise of development, poses a significant environmental threat. This project proposes extensive infrastructural developments including a transshipment port, an airport, and a power plant over vast stretches of the island's unique ecosystem. The plans threaten the destruction of rainforests, the disruption of wildlife habitats, and the pollution of pristine beaches and waters. With approximately 650 plant species, 14 types of mammals, and 78 different bird species, the biological loss could be catastrophic. The endangered leatherback turtle, which nests on these very beaches, may face irreversible threat due to this project.

According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in India, this project is projected to affect more than 130 square kilometers of rich forest cover. It stands as a contradiction to India’s commitment to preserving its ecological wealth and working towards sustainable development. The Environmental Impact Assessment for this project has been widely criticized for underrepresenting the true environmental costs, creating a worrying precedent.

Moreover, this plan could have far-reaching implications for the indigenous communities who call the Great Nicobar Island their home. These communities depend on the land and marine resources for their livelihood. The disruption of their environment threatens their culture and survival.

We propose a reevaluation of the Great Nicobar Project with comprehensive and transparent environmental assessments. Development should not come at the cost of our precious ecosystems and the well-being of indigenous populations. We urge the Indian government to explore sustainable alternatives that prioritize the preservation of natural habitats and protect the rights of indigenous peoples.

Join me in this fight to protect Great Nicobar Island. By signing this petition, you voice your stand against unsustainable development and help safeguard our planet’s irreplaceable ecosystems for generations to come.
