The Issue

As an Indian citizen, I believe we cannot trade irreplaceable ecosystems and the lives of indigenous communities for infrastructure that could be built elsewhere. The Shompen people have no voice in this decision — this petition is my way of lending them one.

The Great Nicobar Island Mega Project threatens to irreversibly damage one of the Earth's precious rainforests, vibrant coral reefs, and the homes of the indigenous Shompen and Nicobarese communities. This project plans to introduce large-scale infrastructure to the island, including a transshipment terminal, airport, and power plant. While aimed at boosting economic development, it comes at a devastating cost to the environment and the people who have inhabited these lands for generations.

The Great Nicobar Island is part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India, home to diverse flora and fauna, several of which are endangered. These lush rainforests act as carbon sinks, mitigate climate change, and house numerous species found nowhere else. The coral reefs are equally critical, providing habitat and breeding grounds for marine biodiversity, shielding against coastal erosion, and supporting local fishing economies. Destroying these delicate ecosystems for infrastructure is short-sighted and irreversible.

Moreover, the indigenous Shompen and Nicobarese communities, who have peacefully coexisted with nature for centuries, face displacement and cultural erosion. Losing their ancestral lands and way of life would be catastrophic — cultures lost are lost forever. Preserving their land is vital for maintaining their unique cultural heritage and ensuring their dignity and survival.

There are alternative locations where such infrastructure could be developed with less ecological and cultural impact. Our government and developers must prioritize these alternatives, respecting the laws meant to protect indigenous peoples and non-negotiable ecological treasures.

We must act now to halt this project, demanding rigorous environmental and social impact assessments and exploring feasible alternatives. Together, we can ensure the survival of the Great Nicobar Island's natural beauty and cultural richness for future generations.

Please sign this petition to protect the Great Nicobar Island from irreversible harm and to stand in solidarity with the Shompen and Nicobarese communities.
