Stop the Government from converting Citywest Hotel into Refugee Centre
The Issue
Having lived in Saggart Village for 17 years, I cherish the close-knit community that has been my home for so long. Just a few years ago, we were a small, peaceful community of about 4,573 people. But recently, our population has surged by 50% due to the arrival of many refugees. As someone with Swedish roots, I have seen firsthand how high concentrations of foreigners in a community can impact the balance and dynamics of its residents. While we should extend a helping hand to those in need, it is vital to do so in a way that doesn't overwhelm local resources or disrupt the social fabric.
The government’s decision to purchase Citywest Hotel and convert it into a permanent refugee center will have an irreversible impact on our village. Such an action not only strains local infrastructure and resources but also places significant stress on both the existing and newly arrived populations. Both groups are likely to suffer from inadequate integration efforts, which are essential for fostering mutual understanding and harmony.
Furthermore, transforming such a significant local landmark into a permanent center may affect local businesses reliant on tourism and disrupt the quiet ambiance many of us value. Studies have shown that sudden population booms can lead to challenges in community integration and place a burden on public services, such as education, healthcare, and transportation, which are often unprepared for rapid changes.
It is essential to find a balanced approach where the needs of refugees seeking safety and the existing community are both met. Instead of a permanent conversion, consider future occupancy plans that can serve both as a temporary shelter for those fleeing danger and a hotel to support local tourism when not in use by refugees. This dual-purpose strategy can moderate the influx, allowing Saggart Village to accommodate change more sustainably over time.
Let’s urge the government to reconsider its approach and choose a path that respects and supports the integrity of our village while still fulfilling its humanitarian obligations. We need strategic and thoughtful urban planning that involves community consultation and respects the needs of all its inhabitants.
Stand with me in preserving the essence of Saggart Village. Please sign this petition to oppose the permanent conversion of Citywest Hotel into a refugee center.
