The Issue

Our national forests are treasures of biodiversity and cultural heritage, crucial not only for the ecosystem but also for the knowledge that indigenous forest dwellers have nurtured over generations. These forests are currently under threat as the government considers allowing private organizations to use them for commercial purposes.

This decision will lead to the destruction of biodiversity, which is irreplaceable and vital for the ecological balance and health of our planet. When forests are exploited for commercial gain, it leads to deforestation, habitat loss, and the extinction of several plant and animal species. Such actions irreversibly alter the landscape, causing harm that cannot be undone.

Moreover, these forests are home to indigenous communities whose lives and traditions depend on the land. These people have a profound understanding and sustainable approach to forest conservation, which has been passed down through generations. By allowing commercial activities, we risk obliterating their way of life, their cultural wisdom, and their invaluable insights into forest ecology.

Currently, national forests cover about 21.7 % of the India's land mass. They provide over half of the drinking water in the country  and are critical for carbon sequestration, thus playing an essential role in combating climate change. The decision to open these lands for commercial use is a short-sighted solution that prioritizes profit over environmental and cultural preservation.

There are alternatives that could provide economic benefits without endangering our national forests. Eco-tourism, for example, can be a sustainable way to create jobs and generate income while preserving the natural environment. Promoting green jobs and renewable energy can also contribute to economic growth without compromising our forests.

It is essential to act now to protect these vital ecosystems. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand against the commercialization of national forests and supporting the preservation of our natural and cultural heritage.

Please sign and help us demand that the government reconsider their stance and protect our national forests from commercial exploitation.
