As Chair of St Helens Woods LNR, I am deeply committed to preserving this beautiful landscape for future generations. In an era where climate change continues to alter the world around us, it's more important than ever to protect our green spaces. The land at Sandrock Bends isn’t just unused space waiting for development—it is an essential wildlife corridor and a natural water buffer that provides connectivity and resilience to the nature reserve at St Helen’s Woods.

Gladman Ltd, a major housing developer, has submitted revised planning for the area. However, these revised plans do very little to address the serious concerns raised by local residents, council specialists, and independent experts in ecology and hydrology. St Helen’s Woods remains at significant risk of degradation and loss. This area is not only a sanctuary for wildlife but also a natural safeguard against the impacts of climate change and urban sprawl.

The development threatens to sever the vital connection to the High Weald, causing a loss of irreplaceable habitat. Unique and sensitive ecosystems stand at risk due to potential increases in contaminated surface water and flooding. Additionally, soil erosion, land instability, and landslip could become a grim reality, jeopardizing both the environment and public safety.

The National Planning Policy Framework emphasizes the importance of conserving and enhancing the natural environment. We must hold Gladman Ltd accountable to these standards. Alternative solutions exist that can meet housing needs without sacrificing our irreplaceable green spaces. We urge Gladman Ltd to engage with the community, explore sustainable alternatives, and prioritize the protection of St Helen’s Woods and its surrounding areas.

We cannot let the delicate balance of life here be devastated by shortsighted development. Sign this petition to stand with the community in protecting the heart of our environment. Let us ensure that this invaluable landscape remains intact for both wildlife and future generations. Your support is crucial—join us in safeguarding our home and heritage by signing this petition today.
