Stop the gerrymandering arms race — protect fair elections now
The Issue
Enough is enough. Our democracy is being torn apart by politicians rigging district maps to keep themselves in power — and now it’s escalating into a full-blown national arms race.
It started in Texas, where Governor Greg Abbott — urged on by Donald Trump — is pushing through a redistricting plan that could flip up to five congressional seats to Republicans before the 2026 election. That’s right: mid-decade redistricting, not because of a census, but because the party in charge wants more control.
In response, California is considering doing the same in reverse — redrawing its own maps to favor Democrats. If these tit-for-tat moves continue, more states will follow. And we, the voters, will be the ones left behind.
This isn’t how democracy is supposed to work. When politicians get to choose their voters instead of the other way around, we all lose — whether we’re red, blue, or independent.
Republicans in Texas admit their map is drawn for “political performance,” not community needs. Democrats in California are weighing maps that would “slash five Republican-held House seats.” Neither side is even pretending it’s about fairness anymore.
Governor Gavin Newsom said, “California will not sit by idly and watch this democracy waste away.” But what really threatens democracy is gerrymandering — no matter who does it.
We cannot let this spiral continue. We need a national push to restore integrity to redistricting. That means strengthening independent redistricting commissions, blocking mid-decade redraws, and ending the manipulation of maps for partisan gain — in every state.
The line has to be drawn here — not around districts, but around democratic principles.
Sign this petition to demand fair, independent redistricting nationwide — before partisan power grabs become permanent.
