The Issue

We, the undersigned members and supporters of Life Time Athletics in Framingham, Massachusetts, strongly condemn the decision to remove the basketball court and replace it with additional pickleball courts. This choice is not a neutral business decision — it is an act of gentrification within our own community space.

For years, the basketball court has been a cultural anchor — a place where people of all backgrounds, ages, and walks of life came together. It has been a home for local players, working professionals, students, and families who see basketball as more than just a sport. It is a community.

By eliminating basketball in favor of pickleball, Life Time is sending a clear message: that certain cultures, sounds, and faces no longer fit the image the club wants to project. This decision replaces a diverse, organic community with one that aligns more neatly with a wealthier, trendier demographic. It’s a textbook example of erasing existing culture to make room for what’s more profitable and marketable.

What’s at Stake
Cultural Erasure:
Basketball has long been a space of inclusion — a sport that transcends income, background, and social class. Taking that away in favor of pickleball represents the slow and quiet removal of community identity, diversity, and accessibility.

Economic and Social Displacement:
The people most affected by this decision are the same ones who built the energy and vibrancy of this gym. Now, they’re being told there’s no room left for them. It’s the same pattern we see in cities across the country: working- and middle-class communities being displaced to accommodate new trends that cater to the affluent.

Loss of Belonging:
The basketball court wasn’t just about exercise — it was about connection. Every night, people met, competed, and supported one another. Removing that space breaks those connections, turning what was once a hub of belonging into another sterile, exclusive space.

Our Demand
We call on Life Time Athletics to reverse this decision immediately and to recognize the deeper social implications of what is being done.
This isn’t just about one court. It’s about who gets to exist, play, and belong in this community.

If Life Time truly stands for inclusivity, diversity, and wellness, then it must act in alignment with those values — not against them.
Preserve the basketball court. Preserve the culture. Preserve the community that was here first.
