The Issue

We, the undersigned, call for an immediate end to the commercial slaughter of seals. The continued killing of these animals raises serious ethical, environmental, and economic concerns that can no longer be ignored.

Each year, thousands of seals are killed, primarily for their fur, oil, and other commercial products. These hunts often take place in harsh and remote conditions, where proper monitoring and humane enforcement are difficult. Numerous investigations and veterinary assessments have raised concerns about whether animals are consistently killed in a way that prevents unnecessary suffering. In an age where humane standards and animal welfare matter more than ever, practices that risk prolonged pain and suffering should not continue.

Seals are not just marine animals harvested for products; they are intelligent, social, and ecologically important creatures. Research has shown that seals are capable of complex behaviors, strong maternal bonds, and even problem-solving skills. Mother seals nurse and protect their pups for weeks, recognizing them by sound and scent in large colonies. These are not unfeeling animals—they form relationships and respond to their environments in sophisticated ways.

Beyond ethical concerns, seal slaughter also impacts marine ecosystems. Seals play an important role in maintaining balance within ocean food chains. Disrupting predator populations can have unintended ecological consequences that affect fish stocks and overall ocean health. Sustainable environmental policy should prioritize long-term ecosystem stability over short-term commercial gain.

There is also a declining global market for seal products. Many countries and consumers have rejected seal fur and oil due to animal welfare concerns. Continuing the hunt despite shrinking demand risks damaging international trade relationships and national reputations. Economic resources would be better invested in sustainable industries such as eco-tourism and coastal community development.

Ending the commercial seal hunt would reflect a commitment to modern ethical standards, environmental responsibility, and global cooperation. We urge lawmakers and regulatory authorities to phase out seal slaughter and support affected communities in transitioning toward humane and sustainable economic alternatives.

By signing this petition, we stand for responsible wildlife management, compassion, and a future where economic progress does not come at the expense of unnecessary animal suffering.
