Stop the Forest Wind Project in Queensland

Stop the Forest Wind Project in Queensland
The issue
To:
The Queensland Government,
Forest Wind Holdings Pty Ltd,
Fraser Coast and Gympie Regional Councils,
State and Federal Environmental Protection Agencies
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the Forest Wind project proposed in the Tuan and Toolara State Forests near Queensland’s Fraser Coast.
This large-scale wind energy project, while marketed as a step toward a cleaner energy future, comes at the cost of significant and irreversible environmental damage, including the destruction of critical habitats and old-growth forest. Tuan Forest is a unique and ecologically sensitive area that supports endangered species, including the koala and greater glider, and provides vital carbon sequestration through its mature native forests.
Our key concerns include:
Environmental Impact:
The Forest Wind project threatens biodiversity by clearing thousands of hectares of native forest and disrupting wildlife corridors. Koalas, gliders, and other native fauna will face increased risk of displacement, injury, or death due to habitat fragmentation and turbine-related hazards.
Cultural Heritage Disregard:
The Tuan Forest is significant to the Butchulla People. The project has not adequately consulted Traditional Owners or respected their cultural and spiritual connection to the land.
Greenwashing of Industrial Development:
Labeling this project as “green energy” ignores the ecological cost. True sustainability requires balancing renewable energy goals with conservation of existing natural ecosystems—not replacing forests with turbines in habitat-rich areas.
Impact on Public Land and Community Use:
This is publicly owned state forest land—set aside for conservation, recreation, and sustainable use—not industrial development. The public has not been properly consulted, and many local residents oppose the project due to its scale, noise, visual impact, and environmental risks.
We demand that:
The Queensland Government and Forest Wind Holdings halt the Forest Wind project immediately;
An independent, transparent environmental impact assessment be conducted, with full public disclosure;
The rights and voices of Traditional Owners be prioritized in all decisions concerning this land;
Renewable energy projects be located in previously cleared, low-conservation-value areas, not in old-growth and biodiverse forests.
We support renewable energy, but not at the cost of our irreplaceable native forests. There is no climate solution that involves destroying the very ecosystems that sustain life.
Protect Tuan Forest. Preserve Biodiversity. Stop Forest Wind.
