Stop the flood plain and traffic crisis coming to the Oaks, Chapel Hill

The Issue

Massive Durham developments will soon impact Oaks Chapel Hill residents and Chapel Hill Country Club members.

You may not be aware but there are a series of developments, totaling ~4,800 units and commercial space on our southeast border of Chapel Hill that will have an environmental and safety impact we will all feel in our area.

While all the benefits from this development will be enjoyed by Durham County, we risk in Chapel Hill and the Oaks changes in the flood plain along Little Creek and a possible ten (10) fold increase in traffic running through a newly connected Lancaster Drive into the Oaks/Chapel Hill Country Club neighborhood.

What you need to know.

  • Massive increases in impervious surfaces creating unchecked stormwater and runoff pose an unacceptable flood risk to the Chapel Hill Little Creek Trails and Bottomlands, surrounding neighborhoods and potentially Rashkis elementary. This area frequently floods, a portion of which is closed due to the Chantal storm last summer. Even during droughts there is standing water close to streets and homes that border these wetlands.
  • The Little Creek watershed, an EPA designated impaired waterway, is subject to increasing urban runoff, impacting water quality and flow. This watershed also contains Natural Heritage Program Significant Natural Heritage Areas.
  • A massive ~4800 units and commercial real estate being developed within less than a one square mile radius without access to public transportation will generate ~ 10,000 additional car trips per day through Chapel Hill neighborhoods without infrastructure to ensure safety of residents. Of note, George King Rd. will remain a narrow gravel street unable to absorb additional traffic, further exacerbating the impact on Chapel Hill with increased burden maintaining the roads.
  • An outdated Durham/Chapel Hill collector road plan that, when adopted, did not consider the scale of development nor climate change impacts on our community. Because the Town of Chapel Hill maintains all roadways on the southeast border of this development, it has the authority to limit further development by permanently closing them.

Why this petition?
Durham City Council has multiple additional rezoning and annexation proposals in this area on their April and May Council agendas, and we are looking to use this petition to raise your concerns with the Durham City Council and the Chapel Hill Town Council.
The next Durham Council meeting is set for May 4th???? at 6pm???????????
