Whilst on holiday, I witnessed firsthand the abhorrent treatment of monkeys in Cape Verde for the sole purpose of touristic attractiveness. Monkeys are removed from their mothers and subjected to appalling conditions. It was a sight too heartbreaking to ignore. Under the guise of pet ownership, these innocent creatures are ill-treated, beaten, and tormented. This cruel and barbaric act has to be curbed. A law needs to be instated to prohibit people from keeping these monkeys as pets under such terrible conditions. It is important to note that primates like monkeys have complex physical and emotional needs that are practically impossible to meet in domestic circumstances. This assertion is supported by the Animal Welfare Institute which claims that primates kept as pets often suffer from poor nutrition and inappropriate socialization (source: Animal Welfare Institute). It's high time we put an end to this inhumane act in Cape Verde and everywhere else. Breaking the chain of animal cruelty starts with us, the concerned citizens.
