Stop the Expansion of GFL Safeguard Landfill in Fairburn, GA

Stop the Expansion of GFL Safeguard Landfill in Fairburn, GA
The Issue
Living in Fairburn, GA, I have become increasingly concerned about the health implications that the expansion of the GFL Safeguard Landfill poses to our community. It deeply affects us, the residents, as this expansion is set to increase pollution and pose significant health risks for all of us living nearby.
The GFL Safeguard Landfill, located in our town, has received proposals for expansion, which would not only increase the volume of waste processed but also likely the levels of harmful emissions and potential leachate into our soil and water sources. This is alarming given that landfill operations already contribute to air and ground pollution, potentially releasing toxins such as methane, carbon dioxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can severely affect our health and environment.
Multiple studies have shown that living near landfills can lead to increased rates of respiratory issues, skin conditions, and even can exacerbate pre-existing health conditions. It is unfair for Fairburn residents to be subjected to these risks, especially when clean air and water should be a fundamental right for all communities.
Moreover, this expansion not only poses health risks but might also diminish our property values and degrade our local environment. Once pristine landscapes could become polluted, affecting wildlife and the natural beauty of our town. This is not the future we envision for Fairburn.
We urge local authorities to reconsider this landfill expansion plan and explore alternative solutions that prioritize community health and environmental preservation. Technologies for waste reduction and better recycling can be enhanced without expanding the landfill's size.
Let us stand together to protect our health, environment, and community from the detrimental effects of this proposed landfill expansion. Please sign this petition to stop the expansion of the GFL Safeguard Landfill and make a stand for a healthier Fairburn.
