The Issue

We, a student group of MCI in cooperation with Scholars at Risk (SAR), urgently call for the immediate release of Ahmadreza Djalali, a Swedish-Iranian doctor who is unjustly facing execution in Iran.

Ahmadreza Djalali was tortured and forced to ‘confess’ to being a 'spy'. He’s been told his execution could take place any day.

Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali is a scholar of disaster medicine who was arrested while visiting Iran to participate in a series of academic workshops. In October 2017, after more than 17 months in jail, Dr. Djalali was convicted and sentenced to death for “corruption on earth,” a charge that appears to relate to his ties to the international academic community. Dr. Djalali has spent significant lengths of time in solitary confinement while awaiting the execution of his sentence, during which his health has rapidly deteriorated. In May 2022, it was reported that Iranian authorities were threatening to carry out Dr. Djalali’s execution. Dr. Djalali is still being denied access to his lawyer and his family in Iran, calls to his wife and children in Sweden, and the medical care that he urgently needs.

His death sentence, which is based on charges of espionage, stands against the very essence of justice and human rights—the same principles that form the foundation of international law and are respected by our global community. Independent international organizations, such as Amnesty International, have highlighted the numerous flaws in his trial and have vigorously called for the annulment of his execution.

The appeal for Ahmadreza's release and the stoppage of his execution has garnered widespread international support, with the European Union and the United Nations expressing concern and urging clemency. We need to amplify our voices to ensure the Iranian authorities comprehend the magnitude of global dismay and opposition to this unjust execution.

Let us stand together for justice, human rights, and the preservation of life. We urge you to sign the petition and be part of this pivotal campaign.
