The Issue

I have witnessed firsthand the vibrant and essential role that small local businesses play in the heart of Herne Bay. These businesses are more than mere establishments—they represent livelihoods, dreams, and the spirit of our close-knit community. However, all of this is now under threat. The Sea Street industrial units on the Nursery Industrial Estate are being earmarked for eviction to make room for more housing developments.

These units are home to a variety of small enterprises that have provided employment and services to many local residents. From artisans and entrepreneurs to service providers, these businesses form the backbone of Herne Bay's economy. They are places where dreams are realized and where our community comes together in support.

The choice to prioritize housing over businesses might seem practical, but it overlooks the long-term effects. According to the Federation of Small Businesses, small businesses are vital components of local economies, accounting for 60% of private sector employment in local areas. If we evict them in favor of housing, we risk dismantling the economic fabric of our town that relies so heavily on these businesses.

Herne Bay thrives on the charm and unique offerings that only local businesses can provide. More businesses translate to more jobs, more local spending, and a bustling town center that attracts visitors and residents alike. Removing these businesses not only obliterates livelihoods but also diminishes the character and economic vitality of our community.

We understand the need for development and housing; however, it should not come at the expense of our hardworking business owners. Alternatives must be pursued. We propose that instead of eviction, the council should explore options such as rezoning or providing incentives for businesses to relocate within the same locality, ensuring that our entrepreneurs remain integral to Herne Bay.

Support us in urging our local council to reconsider this decision and find a balanced approach that safeguards the interests of our community and its businesses. Help us to ensure that small businesses continue to thrive in Herne Bay.

Sign this petition to show your support for these vital enterprises and preserve the very essence that makes Herne Bay unique and prosperous.
