Stop the eviction of Benjamin Shield
The Issue
Benjamin, a vibrant 46-year-old with Down Syndrome, has thrived in his well-loved community for much of his life. For the last seven years, he’s lived happily in a Mencap property, supported by Kingwood—right next door to the home he's known since he was just two years old. His familiarity with the local area has allowed him a level of independence and contentment that is vital for his well-being. With a leisurely walk, Benjamin can get to Church, the local leisure centre, or the nearby bus stop that leads him to volunteer at the care home twice a week—a place where he brings smiles to those around him.
Yet, this harmonious life is under threat. Reading Borough Council has abruptly decided that Benjamin must leave this safe haven because he does not qualify for their newly introduced 24-hour support requirements. While these measures may have merit elsewhere, they do not consider the unique circumstances of individuals like Benjamin, for whom the security of a familiar environment is essential. Removing him from his beloved home will not only sever his treasured community connections but will also disrupt his routine and significantly affect his quality of life.
Neighbourhood connections and community ties are invaluable. Moving Benjamin away from the area he loves and knows so well could cause significant emotional distress and hinder his ability to live independently. His ability to volunteer, engage in community activities, and maintain his social relationships will all be jeopardised.
We urge Reading Borough Council to reconsider this decision. We ask that a tailored solution be found that supports Benjamin’s current living arrangement—a solution that acknowledges the importance of his community connections and the stability that comes with them.
