The Issue

Imagine facing the battle of your life against cancer while also grappling with the challenges of living with a disability. Now add to that the fear of losing your home due to a partial late rent payment.  This is the unbearable reality for a senior citizen in Victoria British Columbia, who is now facing imminent eviction from BC Housing facilities.

This senior who has been a part of our community for over 20 years, is on the brink of losing his home in BC Housing due to a partial late rent payment. He paid the majority of his rent in a timely manner and paid the balance ($215) as soon as he could several days later.

Despite this, the eviction proceedings are moving forward .

if evicted, he risks homelessness and will be placed back on a housing waiting list that could take months or longer.   For someone undergoing cancer treatments and is bed ridden for hours at a time, this loss of stability could have serious consequences. He also has a companion dog that provides emotional support, making it even more difficult to find alternative housing.

In a society as compassionate as ours, we must do better to protect our most vulnerable..

It is not just a home at stake but a place of security and peace, a necessity especially crucial for someone fighting cancer and dealing with the struggles of disability.

This situation calls for compassion , fairness and common sense .

We are calling on BC Housing to

Halt the eviction process immediately.

Review the case with discretion

Consider the tenants 15 year history of timely rent payments and his current medical condition

No one should lose their home over a one time partial late rent payment- especially not a senior battling cancer and a disability

Furthermore, we urge the implementation of a more compassionate late payment policy for tenants who are battling severe health challenges. Consideration should be given to the financial and emotional turmoil faced by senior citizens with disabilities, ensuring they can remain in their homes during critical times.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a system that leaves no one behind, that stands by our elders in their time of need, and that prioritizes humanity over bureaucracy. Let us urge BC Housing to make the compassionate choice. Stand up for this senior and for a fair and empathetic housing policy. Please sign and share to demand action that can make a real difference.
