Every day, I witness the cruel fate of homeless animals in Oklahoma - killed without a fair chance at finding a new home. This heartbreaking reality is not only unfair but it's also inhumane, immoral and unethical. The question that keeps echoing in my mind is: why do we kill homeless animals when we don't treat homeless humans in the same way? The life of an animal is as valuable as any human's.

Inscription on the gates of our shelters, the embodiment of our moral test as a society, should read: 'We don't kill those who have lost their way; we guide them home.' Why then are our actions so contrary? In Oklahoma alone, thousands of healthy animals are euthanized in shelters yearly simply because they can’t find a home. Instead, we need to focus on creating more adoption opportunities and spay/neuter programs to control the animal population responsibly.
