Stop the Ethiopian government from killing stray dogs
The Issue
In Ethiopia, a tragic practice is taking place, causing outrage among animal lovers and compassionate individuals worldwide. The Ethiopian government has been engaged in the systematic killing of stray dogs with poison as a misguided attempt to manage the population of homeless animals in cities across the country particularly in Addis Ababa. This method is not only inhumane but also ineffective in the long term. The Addis Ababa city Administration farmers and urban agriculture development Commission recently announced through Media outlets that the number of stray dogs in Addis Ababa alone is from 28,000 to 30,000 and that it's in the process of importing poison to kill all the stray dogs.
Statistics from organizations such as the World Animal Protection reveal that the population of stray animals in urban areas tends to stabilize naturally when humane management practices are employed. Instead of lethal methods, there are successful strategies employed globally that Ethiopia can adopt. These include trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs, public education campaigns on responsible pet ownership, and the establishment of animal shelters.
The killing of stray dogs does not address the root cause of overpopulation. Rather, it creates a cycle of violence and suffering for tens of thousands of dogs who deserve compassion and care. An estimated 30,000 stray dogs in Addis Ababa alone are at risk unless a more ethical approach is taken.
The global community is increasingly committed to animal welfare standards, and adopting humane stray animal management methods would align Ethiopia with these values. This shift would enhance Ethiopia's reputation and strengthen its ties with countries that prioritize animal welfare. The past practices of poisoning dogs has been witnessed by citizens of Addis Ababa as cruel and horrific where the dogs suffer four hours and days. The beloved female dog in the Piasa area that was pregnant but was given the poison was among the many that was victim of animal cruelty. Because the poison didn't kill her, she was choked and killed by the same people that gave her the poison.
We urge the Ethiopian government to immediately halt the killing of stray dogs and adopt humane management practices. By doing so, Ethiopia can lead by example, fostering a society of empathy and responsibility towards all living beings. Please sign this petition to compel the government to consider humane alternatives and save countless lives. The poor dogs need your help!
