Stop the Essex County Deer Control Program — Choose Humane Coexistence

Stop the Essex County Deer Control Program — Choose Humane Coexistence
The Issue
Essex County’s deer control program threatens our wildlife, our forests, and the natural balance of places like South Mountain Reservation. There are humane, effective alternatives—and it’s time we choose coexistence over killing.
I welcome deer, birds, rabbits, squirrels, and all wildlife into my yard. These animals are not pests or problems—they are a vital part of our shared ecosystem and a living reminder of the natural beauty that still exists in our county.
Our remaining forest land is limited and precious. Deer play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance through seed dispersal, vegetation patterns, and supporting natural food webs. Removing them through lethal means disrupts this balance and can cause long-term harm to the ecosystem we are supposed to protect.
Scientific research shows that lethal deer control often fails to achieve its goals. Studies, including research from Cornell University, indicate that killing deer can actually lead to population rebounds by disrupting social structures and increasing reproduction rates. In contrast, many communities across the country have successfully implemented non-lethal solutions such as fertility control, habitat management, and public education—approaches that are both effective and humane.
We call on Essex County officials to:
- Immediately halt the current deer control program
- Commit to non-lethal, science-based wildlife management
- Protect the biodiversity and natural integrity of our forest lands
This is about more than deer—it’s about the values we choose to uphold. Do we respond to environmental challenges with force, or with compassion, science, and responsibility?
These animals cannot speak for themselves. We must be their voice.
Please sign this petition to protect the wildlife and natural beauty of Essex County, and share it with others who believe that humans and nature can thrive together.
