At Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument in Washington, D.C., a sign once explained how suffragists were beaten and force-fed after a 1917 White House protest, and how their sacrifice helped shift public opinion toward voting rights for women. That sign has been quietly rewritten.

It no longer mentions the violence they endured or the impact their protest had on history.

This is not an isolated edit. Under a 2025 directive from the Department of the Interior, National Park Service sites across the country have been ordered to remove content considered disparaging or outside a narrow, sanitized version of American history.

At Stonewall National Monument in New York, a site central to LGBTQ+ activism, the National Park Service deleted references to transgender people and took down the Pride flag that once hung there. Even after a court fight restored the flag, park materials still describe the LGB movement, leaving trans people out of their own history.

Hundreds of similar changes are reportedly under review right now, threatening to quietly erase the stories of the women and LGBTQ+ people who helped shape these places.

National parks belong to everyone, and so does their history. Sign the petition to demand the National Park Service restore the removed signage and commit to telling the complete story, before more of it disappears for good.
