Stop the dumping of radioactive waste north of McKerrow until public consultation happens

The Issue

August, 2024

ATTENTION!!!  Residents of; AGNEW LAKE, BALDWIN TOWNSHIP, McKERROW, NAIRN-HYMEN, ESPANOLA, MANITOULIN ISLAND, CUTLER,  SABLE/SPANISH, SERPENT RIVER, SHAKESPEARE, SPRAGGE, WALFORD and surrounding areas.

The Ministry of Mines has been planning, since 2019, on transporting 34,046 Tonnes of radioactive niobium ore from Nippising First Nation and North Bay to be re-buried at Agnew Lake.

This project, recently leaked to the public, will excavate 3 major sites for relocation.
Site 1. 15,539 Tonnes
Site 2. 7098 Tonnes
Site 3. 11,409 Tonnes

Plus numerous other smaller sites.

The Ministry used an abandoned gravel pit as a previous dump site. A total lack of oversite by the Ministry led to the radioactive ore being excavated and used as fill on local roadways and for residential use. The Ministry mismanagement endangered the public and they are now attempting to shift the waste to a new location.

68 Millions pounds of radioactive Niobium Ore equates to almost 1330 truck loads. Traveling 200 kilometers, from North Bay, through Sudbury to Nairn Centre and finally Agnew Lake to be re-buried on the surface at a mine site, closed in 1981.

There are currently some areas of the Agnew Lake Uranium Mine where dose estimates exceed the CNSC regulatory limit for casual site users (i.e. hunters and weekend campers).  Are we to trust them to dispose of another 68 million pounds of waste at this site.

The Agnew Lake watershed supplies multiple communities, leads to Lake Huron and the lower Great Lakes.

The Ministry has been planning this project since 2019. The Ministry has held a Public Consultation with the residents of the current site of the radioactive ore, but not with the new recipients, as is required by Provincial law. Why are we just learning of this now?

We want this to stop immediately until proper consultation can take place and all environmental impacts can be properly examined.
