The Issue
Camping has always been a cherished family activity in Ontario, offering an opportunity for families to connect with nature and each other. I believe that our Provincial Parks should remain a safe and welcoming environment for children and families. It is concerning to think of our beautiful parks being turned into places where children may be exposed to people openly consuming alcohol on beaches, trails, playgrounds, and roads.
The proposal by Doug Ford to expand alcohol consumption within our provincial parks poses several issues. Firstly, the increased presence of alcohol can lead to a rise in litter, detracting from the natural beauty that visitors come to enjoy. Secondly, the risk of drunk driving within the parks increases, endangering pedestrians, including children at play. Additionally, park staff—many of whom are students and young adults—could face heightened challenges in managing these situations, especially when Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) resources may be as far away as 50 km.
The current rules governing alcohol consumption in our provincial parks are sufficient. They have successfully balanced the enjoyment of beverages for responsible adults while maintaining the parks as a safe haven for families and nature enthusiasts. Allowing further access to alcohol not only disrupts this balance but also transforms the nature-camping experience from appreciating the great outdoors to merely boozing on the beach.
In Northern Ontario, people come to parks specifically to immerse themselves in the serene environment, to escape the hustle and bustle, and to appreciate the tranquility of nature. If we allow the expansion of alcohol consumption, we risk losing the essence of what our parks represent.
Let us preserve the sanctity of Ontario's Provincial Parks for future generations, ensuring that they remain the pristine and safe environments that families have come to love and cherish. Sign this petition to voice your opposition to Doug Ford's proposal and to support the continuation of the current rules which effectively protect our parks and the families who frequent them. Let's stand together for the preservation of nature and the safety of our children.
