I am working to spark change in our community (El Dorado Kansas). Specifically, the very discriminative Annual Pit Bull Registration, it’s $50 fee and the background check. 

It’s simple. The neighbor next door who owns the Chihuahua is NOT forced to fill out this application. The owner of the Golden Retriever down the road is NOT forced to pay the $50 fee. And only Pit Bull (and “like breed”) owners are subjected to a background check. Ran on both them and their family members. This includes CHILDREN. Why children? When no one could give me an answer when I asked, I was left to assume the City of El Dorado believes we all must be dangerous and need to be watched! (Insert eye rolling emoji here)

Just for owning a certain breed of dog we are being discriminated against and stereotyped. Can anyone show me the proof that you’re a criminal if you own one? I have yet to find that statistic…

Some might argue that the application process is supposed to insure these dogs stay out of the “wrong hands”. For example, felons aren’t legally allowed to own Pits. But for this process to work, the felon would first have to willingly register their animal. Criminals don’t follow rules, but the rest of us do. So who does this hurt? The law abiding citizens who DO willingly register their dog.

Sure seems like this is just another way for them to take our money…

Even if you don’t own a Pit Bull, surely you can see what a classic case of discrimination this is, so please consider signing this petition. 

El Dorado lifted the Pit Bull ban years ago. It’s time to lift the stereotype off the owners.
