The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on Congress to remove the January 1, 2013, cutoff date for lifetime GI Bill benefits and extend the Forever GI Bill to all Post-9/11 veterans, regardless of their separation date. The current law unfairly excludes thousands of veterans who honorably served but left the military before 2013, including medically retired service members and those forced out due to service-connected injuries.

No veteran should be denied the opportunity to use their hard-earned education benefits simply because of an arbitrary cutoff date. We demand fairness and equality in the GI Bill for all those who served after September 11, 2001.

Why This Matters:

• Discriminatory Cutoff: The Forever GI Bill benefits never expire for veterans who separated after January 1, 2013, but expire after 15 years for those who left before this date. This unfairly discriminates against thousands of wounded warriors, caregivers, and those forced into early separation.

• Impact on Medically Retired Veterans: Many veterans who sustained life-changing injuries in combat were discharged before 2013, yet they are denied the ability to use their benefits indefinitely.

• The Promise Made to Veterans: The GI Bill is a benefit earned through service. No veteran should lose access simply because of when they left the military.

We Demand Congress Take Action to:

1. Eliminate the January 1, 2013, cutoff date and extend Forever GI Bill benefits to all Post-9/11 veterans.

2. Ensure fair and equal access to education benefits for all who served in the Global War on Terrorism.

3. Support legislation that removes this arbitrary and discriminatory barrier to veterans’ education.

Take Action:

• Sign this petition to demand fairness for all veterans.

• Contact your representatives and urge them to support an amendment to the Forever GI Bill.

• Share this petition to ensure no veteran is left behind.

Our veterans sacrificed for this country—it’s time for Congress to fix this injustice. Let’s make sure ALL Post-9/11 veterans get the benefits they EARNED!
