STOP the discharge of ALPS-treated Fukushima wastewater into the sea

The Issue

*Update (8/24)

The discharge of ALPS treated Fukushima waste water into the sea is about to start today (24 August) at around 13:00. We absolutely cannot tolerate the forceful discharge, in violation of the prior promise.
We are scheduled to officially deliver the petition on 31st of August. However, as the petition starter, we wanted to make sure your voices were delivered before the discharge starts, so we sent the email to the Government of Japan, requesting not to start discharging.

********
The government is about to discharge ALPS (advanced liquid processing system) treated wastewater into the ocean.

Stronger sense of anxiety and opposition have grown both within Fukushima Prefecture and throughout Japan and even the neighboring countries as the announced day of the ocean discharge draws near.

“Is it really the right decision for the Japanese government to execute this rushed scheme?”
The fishermen, including those of the Zengyoren (National Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations), and the Fukushima Prefectural Fisheries Federation, continue to stand in opposition. They are concerned that the fishing industry in Fukushima Prefecture will be destroyed and that there will be no successors to take over the business.

It is absolutely unacceptable for the government to break the promise made to the fishermen that "no disposal will take place without the understanding of all concerned parties.”

In a public opinion poll, nearly 90% of the people are concerned that "reputational damage is inevitable”.
The National Governors' Association also recognized that "there is a lack of understanding on this issue within Japan and abroad, and there is a concern that Japan will suffer from reputational damage. If the scheme is forced to be carried out under the current  circumstance, all the effort that was put into Fukushima’s reconstruction over the past 12 years will go down the drain.

The public’s understanding, as the government has emphasized, has not been adequately obtained. In such circumstance, the government must not forcibly start the water release. The government should take the responsibility of considering other disposal methods than oceanic discharge while continuing to control the generation of contaminated water and store it on land using the "wide-area water shield wall" and "water collection wells and drainage boring" technologies proposed by experts.

The impact of this scheme has already been seen in foreign countries, in the form of price falls of seafood products that are not just from Fukushima but also from Japan in general. Once ocean discharge begins, it is clear that the impact will spread even further. Not only the fishermen, but also wholesalers, processors, transporters, and all other people involved in the fishing industry, as well as Japan as a whole,  and all the neighboring countries will be affected.

Please help us to ensure that the government and TEPCO keep their promises and do not force the release of ALPS treated Fukushima wastewater into the ocean!
