Stop the Devastating Welfare Cuts in Westminster

Stop the Devastating Welfare Cuts in Westminster
The Issue
Many residents of Pimlico and Westminster live in council housing estates, relying on welfare support to get by. We, the Tachbrook Residents Association, are urging you to help stop the UK Government’s planned welfare benefit cuts. These cuts threaten to devastate communities across Pimlico and Westminster, hitting our most vulnerable neighbours the hardest. From disabled people to single parents to elderly residents, countless individuals in our area rely on these benefits to survive. This is an urgent crisis unfolding on our doorstep, and we must act now before it’s too late.
Nationally, more than a million disabled and chronically ill people could lose essential support like Personal Independence Payment (PIP) under the proposed reforms. Experts warn these changes would push roughly 350,000 households – including 50,000 children – into poverty (Gaurdian, 2025). Shockingly, the government is trying to push through these drastic cuts without any consultation with those affected. We cannot stand by and let our friends and neighbours be driven into destitution.
Our Demands
We call on our local MP, Rachel Blake, to take action now. Our specific demands are:
Reject the planned welfare benefit cuts. MPs must vote against these proposals and pressure the Government to abandon any reductions in essential benefits. We need our representatives to stand up for vulnerable constituents and block these devastating cuts in Parliament.
Protect local support services for those in need. Westminster City Council leaders should safeguard and invest in community support programs – from food banks and housing assistance to disability and elderly care services. If national cuts proceed, our council must step in to shield residents from the worst impacts.
Ensure no one in Pimlico or Westminster is forced into destitution. In a borough as affluent as Westminster, no resident should go hungry, cold, or homeless because of cuts to welfare. We demand strengthened local safety nets (like emergency funds and outreach programs) so that no family or individual is left behind.
How These Cuts Will Hurt Residents
These welfare cuts aren’t abstract numbers – they will hurt real people in our community. Here are just a few examples of who will suffer if the cuts go ahead:
Disabled people: The proposed reforms will make it much harder for people with disabilities to qualify for support, slashing the vital income that allows them to live with dignity. Experts have called these changes “devastating” for disabled people. Many disabled residents could lose their PIP benefits and other help, pushing them into poverty and threatening their independence.
Carers: Those who care for disabled or elderly loved ones rely on modest Carer’s Allowance and other support. Under the new plans, 150,000 carers nationally stand to lose their Carer’s Allowance – a lifeline for families. This means local carers in Pimlico and Westminster could be forced to choose between caring for their loved ones and paying their bills, leaving both carers and the people they care for in dire straits.
Single parents & children: Single-parent families are already struggling to make ends meet. In fact, over 70% of households hit by the existing benefit cap are single-parent familiesbigissue.com, and many are relying on food banks and falling into debt to survive. Further welfare cuts will push many more parents and children to the brink – with increased hunger, schoolchildren going to bed cold, and some families at risk of losing their homes.
Elderly residents: Our pensioners on fixed incomes often depend on benefits and winter fuel support to get through each year. Recent cuts have already forced many older people to choose between heating and eating, resulting in “tens of thousands more pensioners in poverty” (UK Parliament, 2025). If welfare support is slashed further, more of our elderly neighbours will be unable to afford basic necessities or heating, putting their health and dignity at serious risk.
Our Community’s Call to Action
We refuse to let these cruel cuts tear apart the fabric of our community. Pimlico and Westminster pride themselves on caring for our neighbors, and now is the time to show it. By signing this petition, you’re sending a clear message to our MPs and council leaders: We will not accept policies that throw our most vulnerable into destitution. Every signature is a voice standing up for compassion and basic decency.
Please sign and share this petition with fellow residents, friends, family, and local groups. The wider our support, the harder we are to ignore. Our initial goal is to gather at least 500 signatures to demonstrate the strength of local opposition – and with your help, we can reach this quickly. Together, we can stop these devastating welfare cuts and ensure Westminster remains a community that protects and supports all its residents.
