As an individual deeply interested in the agriculture sector, I see firsthand the potential catastrophe tariffs could bring. We are already grappling with high inputs and low output without adequate buyers worldwide. Further tariffs will only serve to accelerate the destruction of our industry, an industry that forms the backbone of our nation. These tariffs risk turning our productive farmland over to billionaires and would result in increasing costs across the agricultural ecosystem. 

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, commodities such as soybeans and pork have seen their markets severely impacted by the tariffs. The agricultural sector’s contribution to the GDP has significantly declined in recent years, from 4.2 percent in 1980 to a mere 0.6 percent in 2018. These numbers spell doom for our farmers and our economy at large if the tariffs go through.
