STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF SWIFTLET HABITATS: BAN THE HARVESTING OF WILD BIRD NESTS

The Issue

"SWIFTLETS' SILENT CRY"

Should we treat nature as something to be exploited and used at will to satisfy our own greediness???

SWIFTLETS -tiny, tireless birds build their nests entirely from their own saliva, creating delicate structures high on cliffs and in dark cave walls. These remarkable nests are now being harvested on a massive scale to produce a so-called delicacy: bird’s nest soup.

Swiftlets are voiceless and defenseless birds. They cannot speak for themselves, nor can they protect their fragile nests from being taken. When their nests are harvested—often before their eggs have hatched or their chicks have grown—they endure an unspeakable loss. Though they cannot express it in words, one can only imagine the deep, instinctive sadness they feel as their young are taken from them. Their quiet suffering calls for our compassion, our protection, and our action.

According to statistics, China is by far the world’s largest consumer of swiftlet bird nests, accounting for over 90 percent of global consumption. This overwhelming demand has fueled a booming industry, particularly in Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, where the nests are harvested—often at great ecological and ethical cost.

The impact includes:

1. Nests are often removed before eggs are laid or chicks hatch, resulting in total breeding failure.

2. Entire colonies are disturbed or destroyed, putting swiftlet populations at risk of collapse.

3. The high demand drives illegal trade and further habitat exploitation.

4. All of this is done for a soup with questionable health benefits and an exorbitant price tag.

We urgently and respectfully call on the bird nest harvesters in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, and the major consumers in China, to bring an end to the harvesting and consuming of swiftlet nests. This industry, driven by luxury demand, causes unnecessary suffering to wildlife and contributes to biodiversity loss. We appeal for a shift toward ethical, sustainable alternatives that protect these vulnerable birds and the environments they depend on.

These are the guidelines that should be considered by the countries involved to help end the unethical and cruel practice of bird nest harvesting:

-BAN the import and sale of wild-harvested nests.

-Bring laws that classify wild nest harvesting as ecological destruction or wildlife exploitation.

-Train and deploy rangers to monitor caves and nesting sites, especially during breeding seasons.

-Use drones, sensors, and local reporting networks to detect illegal harvesting.

-Dispel myths about bird's nest soup’s health benefits.

-Offer financial incentives to cave harvesters to switch to farming or eco-tourism.

-Monitor & Enforce    Surveillance and prosecution of illegal activity

-Require that nests are collected only after chicks have fledged.

-Educate Public    Health myths + environmental consequences

-Engage Communities    Transition from exploitation to conservation

-Raise consumer awareness of the environmental cost of wild nest consumption.

Swiftlets may be small, but protecting them symbolizes something much larger: our shared responsibility for ethical trade, environmental protection, and international cooperation.

We urge all responsible authorities to act now—before it's too late.

*****ABOUT ME****

“I am a voice for the voiceless, living with compassion for all sentient beings.”

I stand firmly and wholeheartedly against the cruelty and inhumane ways in which animals are exploited to satisfy human greed. These beautiful beings were not placed on this Earth for us to harm or consume—they are here to bring balance, beauty, and richness to our world. If we believe we have a right to live on this Earth, then they, too, have that same right—equally, if not more.

Animals cannot speak for themselves, so it is our responsibility to be their voice, their protectors, and their guardians. We must care for them, defend them, and honour their natural right to live in peace.

My main purpose here is to raise awareness about the immense cruelty behind swiftlet bird-nest harvesting, along with many other forms of exploitation happening around the world. Through writing petitions and appealing to authorities, we can stand together against these harmful practices and move toward creating a more ethical, sustainable, and compassionate world for all living beings.

Thank you. 🙏
