Stop the Destruction of Arctic Ice by Ships and Oil Companies

Stop the Destruction of Arctic Ice by Ships and Oil Companies

The Issue

Like many citizens, I am tired of being wrongly scapegoated for the melting ice in our arctic regions when the real culprits, like oil companies and governments, are massively contributing to it with their icebreaking operations. These entities, with their huge ice breaking ships, plow through thousands of miles of pristine ice each year, turning solid ice into fast-melting slush. This alone undermines their narrative that the ordinary citizen is primarily responsible for this environmental catastrophe.

Scientific studies suggest that the transformation of ice into slush can speed up the process of melting by as much as 50% (Oerlemans, 2001). To put things in perspective, an estimated 220,000 miles of solid ice have been turned into slush. That's nearly the distance from Earth to the Moon but barely noted in the public discourse on climate change.

Furthermore, it's not only about the ice melting. The ice is a delicate ecosystem which the planet depends on. Many species call this environment home, and any changes we make to it can have drastic effects, decimating populations and disrupting food chains (Post et al., 2013).

Let's put the responsibility back where it belongs. It's high time governments and corporations stop their destructive actions against the Arctic ice. It's not only the physical ice that they are destroying; they are contributing to climate change and disturbing an extremely delicate ecosystem.

Stand with us. Let's change this narrative. Let's save our Arctic ice from needless destruction. Please sign this petition to urge governments and businesses globally to halt damaging icebreaking operations in the Arctic.
