The Issue

We, the professionals in the barbering and cosmetology industry, are deeply concerned about the potential impact of Assembly Bill 225, which aims to deregulate barbering practices. Our profession demands specialized education and training, and we have dedicated thousands of hours and significant financial resources to attain our qualifications. This bill threatens to lower the standards of our profession.

Traditionally, becoming a professional barber requires 1,500 hours of specialized schooling, which arms practitioners with critical techniques to maintain proper hygiene, appropriate tool usage, and the art of hair cutting, styling, and grooming. However, under the new rule, this meticulous and foundational training could become optional, thereby putting public health at risk due to potential proliferation of improperly sanitized tools.

Additionally, this bill belittles our profession by not placing value on the time and effort we have invested in our skills and craft. The possible influx of under-trained barbers could also flood the market, leading to undercutting and destabilization of prices. This, in turn, threatens our livelihoods.

We strongly believe in upholding standards and quality in our industry, and thus oppose Assembly Bill 225. We urge everyone who values professional services and public health to stand with us. Please join our cause and help keep our profession dignified and our services safe by refusing to support this bill. Sign the petition now.
