Stop the decay of the iconic ex-Bugatti factory (La Fabbrica Blu) in Campogalliano Italy
The Issue
The ex-Bugatti factory in Campogalliano (IT), famously known as "La Fabbrica Blu", is a beacon of avant-garde architecture but is now in grave danger of becoming in an irreversible state of decay if nothing is done swiftly to protect it.
We must do something to protect this historic site and we must do it now!
Built during the late 1980s under the vision, guidance and supervision of architect Giampaolo Benedini with one goal in mind; to provide the best facility possible for the development, testing and construction of the legendary Bugatti EB110, the iconic brainchild supercar of Romano Artioli.
The site, comprising a total of 75.000 m2 land space with 13.000 m2 built space consisting of assembly halls, engine building and testing rooms, visitor accommodations, offices, showroom and even with its own on-site test track, has become largely defunct since the September 1995 bankruptcy of the former Bugatti Spa establishment.
The buildings have a distinct design from each other yet everything seems to be in great harmony and symbiosis. A well-thought out ground plan optimized for its intended goal; to produce the most iconic 90s supercar to ever be created. The details on the buildings are simply stunning and have been meticulously designed and crafted. Examples of this is the panelled structure in Bugatti blue (hence the name Fabbrica Blu), the ventilation ducts in the shape of exhausts, the geometry of the open envelope assembly halls with the recurring EB logo, the central round exhibition space with its characteristic details and many more elements.
Basically, the entire site is a modern-day monument in disguise and an attest to Italian design, craftsmanship and cultural (automotive) history.
Yet, despite the careful efforts of volunteers as Ezio Pavesi and his son Enrico, to maintain the site as best as they could since the 90s, the site has largely deteriorated over time due to a lack of serious and committed (re)development initiatives and necessary maintenance.
Unfortunately, this process has been aggravated even further by the current owner, who started demolition of (part of) the internal structure in 2021 for his own development purposes. Due to issues with the current owner, these plans have been halted, creating unrepairable damages to the internal structure and authentic elements of the buildings. Moreover, the building have been left completely open and vacant since 2023, creating even more damage to this historical site due to vandalism and theft.
The current state of the site is well-covered in a recent news article; https://ilcampoonline.it/home/ulitme-notizie/item/816-la-fabbrica-blu-la-bugatti-e-terra-di-nessuno.html?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR1WVFJP6M14NC20wUnGEagrhcaiGscbAhLhF_OeVe65ww2Np3UaN-t06Jo_aem_C3IyGk5fA5uG1KeEtMLpWQ
We must act now before it's too late. Therefore, this petition was set up in order to engage with and motivate local governing bodies to protect this site against any further decay, damage and vandalism. The more this petition is signed, the stronger the signal we'll be able to provide to these governing bodies to act upon implementation of protection measures for the site.
If you feel that the Campogalliano site has architectural, cultural and historical value, and that it needs to be protected so it can sustain in the future, please take a minute to sign this petition.
Let's save La Fabbrica Blu for another century and many more to come!
From a Bugatti, and automotive enthusiast, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help.
Best,
Maurice
