Stop the Debarment of Collective Impact: Protect Essential Youth Services in San Francisco

Stop the Debarment of Collective Impact: Protect Essential Youth Services in San Francisco
The Issue
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the proposed debarment of Collective Impact, a vital nonprofit organization that has served San Francisco’s youth - especially those from historically marginalized and underserved communities - for nearly two decades.
Collective Impact is more than an afterschool program. It’s a safe haven, a launchpad for future leaders, and a critical support system for hundreds of young people in our city. Through programs like Mo’MAGIC, summer camps, college and career pathways, and family support services, this organization fills a void in communities too often overlooked. Ninety-percent of participants come from low‑income households and qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, serving predominantly opportunity youth who most need support.
Recently, the San Francisco City Attorney raised concerns about administrative and accounting practices at Collective Impact. While any nonprofit must be held to standards of fiscal responsibility, the proposed penalty - debarment - is an excessive and disproportionate response. Debarment would effectively shut down the organization, cutting off life-changing services to children and families who rely on them most.
Instead of dismantling a deeply rooted, community-trusted organization, the City should pursue a path of reform, support, and partnership. Collective Impact has already taken steps to address the concerns raised, and they are committed to improving their practices and compliance. What they need is oversight and opportunity, not obliteration.
We urge the City to:
- Halt the debarment process immediately.
- Engage Collective Impact in a corrective action plan with transparency and accountability.
- Recognize the irreplaceable value of Collective Impact’s work in advancing equity, opportunity, and safety for San Francisco youth.
The stakes are too high. The children and families served by Collective Impact should not pay the price for administrative missteps. Let’s protect what works, improve what doesn’t, and stand by organizations doing the hard work of community building every day.
