Stop the De-Annexation of a Local 70-Acre Site for a Dirt Pit and Type III Landfill

The Issue

As a local homeowner, this proposed plan to de-annex 70-acre site for the development of a dirt borrow pit and a Type III "Vegetative" Landfill is deeply personal. Studies have shown we stand to face a direct fall in my home value between 6-13% (many show up to 30%) should this development proceed - a reality shared by many homeowners residing within 3 miles of such sites.

ALL five Sulphur City Council Districts and the West side of the City of Westlake will be effected by this proposed development off Prater Rd, just north of Highway 90 in Sulphur.

Beyond affecting our home values, this proposal raises red flags for our local environment. The transformation of lands into Type III landfills has  proven to pose harmful effects to our ecosystems. An expanse of 70 acres dramatically intensifies these harmful effects, threatening to disrupt our local flora, and negatively impacting the environment's natural balance.

In addition to these environmental concerns, increasing the number of dirt borrow pits is linked with negative health effects on local residents, including respiratory problems due to increased dust and impaired water quality.   It will also increase tractor-trailer traffic on our roads by the developer company's estimate of 120 trucks per day.

We appeal to the relevant authorities to reconsider this de-annexation proposition. The Sulphur Land Use Committee has already voted 5-0 against the de-annexation and we also implore our local community members to stand against this detrimental change to our neighborhoods by contacting your local representatives and urge them to also vote NO!

We must protect our environment, our health, and our homes. Please sign this petition to show your stance and safeguard our community.
