Stop the Data Center on the Bristol-Elkhart County Line Near the Humane Society!
Stop the Data Center on the Bristol-Elkhart County Line Near the Humane Society!
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully urge local officials and decision-makers to reject or reconsider the proposed data center planned near our community and the local humane society.
While we recognize the importance of technological infrastructure, this project raises serious concerns about its potential impact on residents, animals, wildlife, and the environment.
June 4, 2026 Town Meeting: The Bristol Town Council held a heavily attended public meeting where frustrated residents demanded a construction moratorium. Council President Jeff Beachy stated that they would take the moratorium request under consideration, but no final vote or decision was reached.
Bristol, Indiana residents are actively fighting against potential data center developments on local farmland, packed into a town hall meeting just last night. Community members have formally requested that the Bristol Town Council pass a one-year moratorium on any data center construction.
Our concerns include:
The 500-Acre Annexation (March 2026): In March 2026, the town council voted 3-1 to annex nearly 500 acres of farmland belonging to the Kauffman family trust near County Road 19 and the Elkhart County Humane Society. Officials plan to combine this with an additional 250 acres (merging the Wilhelm and Kauffman properties) and seek Elkhart County approval to rezone the total ~750 acres for manufacturing.
Continuous noise generated by cooling systems, generators, and facility operations.
Potential low-frequency humming and increased decibel levels that WILL AFFECT nearby homes and quality of life.
STRESS and WELFARE concerns for animals housed at the humane society located near the proposed development.
Potential impacts on local wildlife and natural habitats.
Increased demand on WATER and ENERGY resources.
Changes to the rural and residential character of the area.
Increased traffic, construction disturbance, and long-term industrialization of the community.
The Humane Society serves vulnerable animals that deserve a calm and healthy environment. Residents also deserve the ability to enjoy their homes, outdoor spaces, and community without the constant presence of industrial-scale noise and infrastructure.
We believe development should be balanced with responsible planning that protects people, animals, natural resources, and the character of our community.
Therefore, we respectfully request that local officials:
Conduct a thorough and transparent review of all environmental and noise impacts.
Consider the effects on the nearby humane society and surrounding wildlife.
Seek alternative locations that are better suited for industrial-scale data center development.
Prioritize the health, well-being, and voices of community members in the decision-making process.
We’re also worried that infrastructure costs whether through increased utility rates, taxes, or public spending will fall on residents, raising household bills over time. We want transparency on who truly pays for this project.
Our community, our animals, and our future deserve thoughtful protection.
