In June, the commissioners publicly assured us that there were no plans to bring a data center to Halifax County, North Carolina. This initially came as a relief to many of us who cherish the unique rural character and tranquil environment of our home. However, recent developments suggest that these assurances may no longer hold true.

The proposed data center threatens to transform our community in ways that were never discussed with us, the local residents. It'll likely lead to increased noise pollution, and environmental degradation. Data centers are known for their massive energy consumption and water usage, which could stress our local resources and infrastructure. The peaceful way of life we've enjoyed for generations is at risk.

Economic benefits are often touted as the main reason for bringing such projects to rural areas, but at what cost? The jobs created by data centers are often not substantial enough to outweigh their drawbacks, and they seldom provide opportunities for the existing local workforce. Furthermore, these centers can pose significant environmental risks. They consume enormous amounts of electricity and require constant cooling, often leading to substantial carbon emissions and heat pollution.

Moreover, why was there a lack of transparency from our commissioners? Community voices should matter, especially in decisions that have such long-lasting impacts. We need open communication and real dialogue about developments in our area, not decisions made behind closed doors.

Our community deserves to have a say in the future and in the preservation of our environment. We hold a responsibility to protect our green spaces and maintain the quality of air and water that our children and future generations depend on.
