The Issue

The plan to construct a Data Center in Athens, Texas, has raised significant concerns among the residents of our community, and like many here, I am deeply worried about the negative impact this project could have on our local environment.

Data Centers are known to consume enormous amounts of energy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers account for about 2% of the total electricity use in the United States, and the rate of energy consumption is expected to grow. This thirst for power translates into a substantial carbon footprint, which will adversely affect the air quality we breathe, the sustainability of our natural resources, and the overall quality of life in our town.

Data centers also present significant health risks to surrounding communities and employees, primarily through air pollution, noise pollution, and water resource strain. Diesel backup generators and fossil-fuel powered cooling systems emit hazardous pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and fine particulate matter (PM 25), leading to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and increased cancer risks.

In addition to energy consumption, there is also the concern of water usage. Data Centers typically require large quantities of water for cooling purposes. With potentially millions of gallons of water diverted annually from our local supplies, we risk exacerbating drought conditions, with lasting repercussions for our agriculture and daily living.

Moreover, the structural demands of a Data Center could lead to significant changes in land use, negatively impacting our local biodiversity. The clearing of land for construction often leads to habitat destruction, threatening the local flora and fauna that make Athens such a unique and beautiful place to live.

Our community takes pride in its rural heritage and the natural beauty that surrounds us. The introduction of a Data Center threatens to undermine the very qualities that make Athens special. Instead of succumbing to the allure of short-term economic benefits, let’s focus on sustainable growth that preserves our environment for future generations.

We propose alternative solutions that balance economic growth with environmental responsibility. By investing in renewable energy projects, local agriculture, and eco-friendly initiatives, we can create jobs and stimulate our economy without sacrificing the integrity of our environment.

We urge local decision makers and stakeholders to reconsider the development of a Data Center in Athens, Texas. Let’s prioritize the preservation of our community’s heritage and ecological health over fleeting profits. Please sign this petition to make our voices heard and to protect the future of Athens, Texas.
