🛑Stop the Cutting of 1.25 Lakh Trees in Gadchiroli – Save Forests, Wildlife, and Tribals
The Issue
🌳 Why this petition matters
The Government's decision to allow the felling of 1.25 lakh trees in Gadchiroli threatens not only the lungs of Maharashtra but also the livelihoods of indigenous Adivasi communities, biodiversity, and wildlife that depend on this ancient forest ecosystem.
Gadchiroli is not just a remote district — it is a critical ecological zone that hosts dense forests, tigers, leopards, elephants, medicinal plants, and over 1,000 tribal villages. The mass deforestation planned for mining or development projects will have irreversible effects on:
Climate: Trees help regulate rainfall, temperature, and oxygen levels. Cutting 1.25 lakh trees will worsen heat and drought conditions.
Wildlife: This forest is home to endangered species, many of which will lose their habitat permanently.
Adivasi Rights: The Forest Rights Act, 2006 mandates that local Gram Sabhas must give consent for any land use change — but reports suggest that due process has not been followed.
---
⚠️ We demand:
1. Immediate halt to tree felling permissions in Gadchiroli
2. Independent Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) with public transparency
3. Respect for the Forest Rights Act (2006) — Gram Sabha consent must be made public
4. Review of all mining/development projects threatening forests in Maharashtra
5. Explore sustainable alternatives that balance development and ecology
---
🧭 Who we are:
We are citizens, students, environmentalists, and forest dwellers who care about our forests, future generations, and the Constitution of India which promises us the right to a clean and healthy environment.
