Stop the cuts to Regina Public School Band program

Stop the cuts to Regina Public School Band program
The Issue
The Regina Public School Band program, a keystone of our children's holistic education, is at risk due to board mismanagement. Music education is a curricular activity; it is a vital component of a well-rounded education that enhances students’ cognitive abilities, fosters creativity, and promotes emotional well-being. Creating barriers and reducing the program is not just a disservice to our children but an oversight of their future and the community's cultural richness.
Studies have shown that students who participate in band programs perform better academically. According to research from the University of British Columbia, students engaged in music-related activities surpass their non-musical peers in standardized testing. Additionally, band programs cultivate discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—qualities that are imperative for success in education and life.
Regina’s band program has been integral to nurturing budding talents and providing students with opportunities to explore and excel in music. Taking this away would mean stripping these opportunities from our youth and widening the gap in access to comprehensive education. It is not only about preserving a program but about investing in the future of our children and, by extension, our community.
We urge the Regina Board of Education to reconsider their decision. Instead of making drastic changes to this invaluable program, we call for a consultative approach that involves dialogues with music educators, band directors, and engaged parents. Let us collectively brainstorm viable solutions that sustain this program without compromising educational quality. Go back to the drawing board and employ evidence based strategies that safeguard our children's right to a complete educational experience.
Please, take a stand for our children and our community's future by signing this petition to stop the cuts to Regina Public School Band program.
