Stop the Cuts to Glasgow's Teaching Jobs - Protect Our Children's Education

The Issue

Petition Description:

Glasgow City Council has announced a drastic plan to cut around 450 teaching jobs over the next three years as part of an effort to save £27.8 million. This decision threatens to significantly impact the quality of education for all children in Glasgow, potentially leading to larger class sizes, reduced support for pupils, and an increase in exclusions. We, the undersigned, are parents, educators, and concerned citizens who urge the council to reconsider these cuts and find alternative solutions that do not compromise our children's future.

Why This Matters:

The proposed job cuts have been described as "madness" by teaching unions, warning that fewer teachers will negatively affect all pupils' learning experiences. The initial cut of 172 jobs in the first year is only the beginning, with more significant reductions planned in the following years. This move contradicts the Scottish Government's pledge to protect and increase teacher numbers, highlighting a concerning disparity in educational priorities.

The Impact:

  • Reduced Learning Support: With fewer teachers, personalized attention and support for students, especially those with additional needs, will be severely limited.
  • Increased Class Sizes: Larger classes mean less effective teaching and learning, impacting students' academic performance and overall school experience.
  • Rise in Exclusions: The lack of adequate in-school support could lead to an increase in exclusions, further marginalising vulnerable students.

Our Call to Action:

We call on Glasgow City Council and relevant stakeholders to:

  • Re-evaluate the proposed budget cuts to education and consider the long-term impacts on Glasgow's children.
  • Explore alternative budget solutions that do not involve reducing the number of teachers.
  • Engage in transparent and inclusive dialogue with parents, teachers, and unions to find a viable path forward that protects our children's education.
