STOP the cuts to Brampton recreation centre hours
STOP the cuts to Brampton recreation centre hours
The Issue
We are calling on the City of Brampton to reconsider changes to recreation centre hours taking effect in May 2026, which includes closing most locations by 9:00 PM while extending or reducing hours unevenly across others (some rec centres closing as early as 8PM!)
These changes do not reflect how residents actually use these spaces. Many people, especially those with full-time jobs, caregiving responsibilities, or other daytime commitments depend on evening access after 8:00 PM for fitness, programs, and community connection. Eliminating late classes and gym time effectively excludes a large portion of our community.
Recreation centres are more than fitness spaces! They are essential hubs for social connection and mental well-being. Limiting evening access disrupts routines, reduces opportunities to connect, and risks increasing isolation.
These changes also negatively impact recreation staff and instructors, many of whom already do not get access to full time hours. Reduced programming means fewer opportunities and less job security.
Finally, the plan lacks fairness and transparency. “Standardizing” hours while making exceptions for some locations creates inequity and raises concerns about how decisions are being made. Additionally, there was no meaningful consultation with residents or staff, and as a result, these changes do not reflect community needs.
We urge the City to:
- Maintain current operating hours across all recreation centres and its programs
- Ensure fair and consistent access across locations
- Engage in meaningful consultation with residents and staff before making changes
Sign this petition to protect accessible, inclusive, and equitable recreation services in Brampton.
