Stop the Cruel Ordinance Targeting Houseless Neighbors in Summit

The Issue

We are deeply disturbed that our city, Summit, a community known for its wealth and compassion, is considering an ordinance that would fine or jail people simply for having nowhere else to go.

This is not who we are.

Our city has made real progress in reducing homelessness. We were even recognized nationally for it. That recognition came not from punishment, but from support, outreach, and housing-first efforts. Turning our backs now on those who still need help would be a shameful betrayal of everything we've worked for.

The proposed ordinance would criminalize poverty. It threatens people with up to 90 days in jail or $2,000 in fines just for sleeping outside. These aren’t criminals, they are human beings experiencing unimaginable hardship. People who need support, not police. Stability, not sentences.

We live in one of the wealthiest communities in the country. We have the resources to do better. We have done better. Let’s continue leading with humanity, not cruelty.

We urge our city leaders: Reject this ordinance. Invest in solutions, not punishment. Show the rest of the country that Summit chooses compassion, not criminalization.
