Croydon council have proposed a 15% increase to each households council tax bill and have been granted permission to go ahead with this increase by Central Goverment. 

Council tax is not allowed to rise by over 4.99% without a referendum- but the Government is letting Croydon Conservatives hike it up by 15% with no say for residents. They know it’s not fair so they’ve cancelled our referendum!

This is mostly due to the fact that poor management of the Councils Finances led to Croydon Council being declared bankrupt  for the third time.

Several of Croydon’s senior officers were suspended in relation to this - director of finance Lisa Taylor, executive director of place Shifa Mustafa, executive director of localities Hazel Simmonds and executive director of health, wellbeing and adults Guy Van Dichele - following a report into senior management actions between April 2017 and September 2020 by the Local Government Association.

An LGA report following a damning rapid review commissioned by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government was published earlier this month.

The report claimed that Cllr Newman had created an “inner circle of a small number of cabinet members” who were “very controlling in their management of the council and its finances”.

Allegations of fraud and severe bullying have been made and several Council workers have spoken out about a culture of "bullying" towards anyone who questioned this inner circles reckless decisions.

Expecting Croydon Residents ( who already live in a borough rife with crime and poverty) to foot the bill for the inconpentence of Council Officials is not only unfair it is deeply immoral and a real indication of how our Council leaders view their population. 

Worse Still, disgraced Former Head of Croydon Council, Joe Negrini, was handed a whopping £440,000 "exit payment" at the exact same time many Council workers were being made redundant. 

I urge you to sign and share this petition to Stop the residents of Croydon being forced to pay for the incompetence of these Officials, especially at a time when the price of Food and Energy is already crippling so many households leading to a 65% increase in repossession/evictions and a drastic rise in suicides.

Many of Croydon's Districts sit within the 10% most deprived areas in England and with an already burdened population the possible ramifications of this increase are catastrophic.
