Stop the Conversion of Two Lanes into Bike Lanes
Stop the Conversion of Two Lanes into Bike Lanes
The Issue
I'm greatly concerned with the plan to turn two lanes of traffic into a bike lane. We don't need a bike lane - that's what the greenway is for. This plan will limit the flow of traffic, promoting congestion and potential safety risks for not only drivers but also the bikers the lane aims to protect.
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the number of bike commuters in the U.S. has only increased by just over one percent in the past decade. Meanwhile, there has been a steady increase in the number of cars on the road - with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics showing a growth of nearly 10 percent in the last ten years. This indicates that our city's roads require more lanes to accommodate car commuters, not less.
Furthermore, a 2019 study in Journal of Transport and Land Use stated the demand for auto travel will continue to rise in foreseeable future even with the increased bicycling infrastructure. Evidently, removing two lanes of traffic for a bike lane does not align with the transportation needs of the majority.
This change threatens the daily routines of many, and it ignores the existing greenway that is designated for this very purpose - promoting safe biking away from heavy traffic. Let's use our resources wisely. Stop the conversion of two lanes into bike lanes. Sign this petition to preserve our roadways and keep traffic moving.
